The company that can dominate will make a lot of money

LEDs will outsell incandescents in North America in 2014, according to some research. And LEDs will become the most popular A-type technology by 2016, with North American shipments reaching almost 370 million, a more than tenfold increase from the roughly 33 million shipped last year. For the manufacturers, LEDs pose a new challenge. They offer higher profit margins, but because they can last for decades, people will be buying fewer bulbs -- of any sort. "The company that can dominate will make a lot of money," said Philip Smallwood, senior lighting market analyst at IMS Research. "So it's a big push to get into it early." President of Epistar Corporation commented, “This latest capacity expansion in Xiamen is in keeping with our goal to maximize our position in the China LED backlighting, automotive and general illumination market. can be judged against other tested LEDs on an equal scale

Standardization has become a key factor in LED adoption in the global lighting market - not only in safety standards and performance standards but also more importantly, in reliability and lifetime testing. LM80 is the lighting standard by which all major LED manufacturers are complying with for lumen maintenance testing. It is a standardized test method of at least 6,000 hours and at certain controlled conditions that is required of all lighting LEDs so that each LED tested, regardless of manufacturer, can be judged against other tested LEDs on an equal scale and compared. LED backlights to be stronger than expected this quarter

The company’s chairman, Alpha Wu, estimates global demand for LED backlights to be stronger than expected this quarter, noting the company has secured orders to keep production lines humming at least until December mostly due to a brisk TV market in China driven by government subsidies. Wu said when the company developed patented lenses for direct-view backlights two years ago made the company the joke the industry for adding to TV thickness, but felt such lens design made LED TVs more competitive. Widespread replacement of cold cathode fluorescent lamp with LED as the primary backlight for LCD panels proves the success of the company’s investment in lens technology. This year, the company’s sales will be mostly driven by backlights for tablet PCs, laptops and TVs. In tablet PC market, the company has reportedly penetrated supply chains of Google, Amazon, Asustek and Microsoft. So far, the company has filled 30-40% of global market for LED backlights for non-Apple tablet PCs.

Highly visible light and modern design with low energy consumption

HID lamps and LED are the future of general and automotive lighting as these feature not only good quality of light but also low levels of energy consumption. They do not yet however fulfil all typical demands for these sectors. In this regard, HID lamps for general lighting can only be conditionally dimmed, do not have instant light and the complete system with ballast is not compact enough; LED and its operating electronics have to fight with the higher temperatures in vehicles. Purchase costs are also comparably high. In order to make HID and LED marketable to a wide public, a consortium from across Europe has been committed since 2010 to the European SEEL project, planned to run over a three year period. Companies and research institutes from Germany such as AUDI AG, BAG electronics, Bender + Wirth, Elmos Semiconductor, Infineon Technologies, the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Micro-integration Berlin, NXP Semiconductors, OSRAM AG, Philips Technologie GmbH (Aachen) and th...

declare bankruptcy under a new government resolution to reduce subsidies

Analysts point out oversupply and the economic downturn has depressed prices to below production levels, meaning large numbers of small companies have already closed their businesses. It’s no choice but to integrate or declare bankruptcy under a new government resolution to reduce subsidies. Over the past three years, the Chinese government has been instrumental in providing support to Chinese LED chip companies in the form of tax breaks and free land use. It has also provided $1.6 billion of funds to companies to purchase the MOCVD. Due to government support, global share of the market for packaged LED components rose from 2 per cent in 2010 to 6 per cent in 2011. But the boom years are coming to an end, with many of China’s LED chipmakers operating their factories at 50 per cent capacity. Around half of the 700 or so factories that received government help have been left idle. Now the Chinese government is said to want to reduce the expenditure given to smaller companies focussing in...
