LED joint venture in China with LED chipmaker Formosa Epitaxy

Demand for LED Linear high bay light was being restricted by intense price competition in the CCFL segment, and inventory levels remain high. Against this backdrop, Amtran was looking to diversify it business into the high-ASP LED lighting market. It is expected to focus on 5-7watt LED light bulbs at a price range around US$10 for Amtran.

In the LED lighting, Amtran had set up a LED joint venture in China with LED chipmaker Formosa Epitaxy and packaging house Unity Opto Technology, which the source supplying was Epistar and packaging services were provided by Everlight Electronics. Also, Amtran together with Everlight and LG Display had set up a packaging house in Wujiang, China. But the possibility of entering the LED lighting market was needed to study.

With the BenQ Group's original plan, it was to make Lextar Electronics set up an LED lighting brand and develop LED light bulbs, light bars and other products. But, Lextar has become an OEM partner. So, led high bay light has chosen BenQ to run the LED lighting brand without conflict.

Currently, The BenQ Group includes LCD panel maker Au Optronics (AUO) and developing high-end LED lighting producer Qisda, which has entered the high-end lighting supply chain in Europe. So Qisda's design center was expected to support the BenQ's lighting products development.
