LEDs are inherently durable and long-lasting components. However, achieving the LED's long lifetime performance requires careful design and testing of the electronic power and control systems and the thermal network. The extensive characterization and reliability testing that OptoElectronix incorporates into every product is the result of its extensive experience in LED and semiconductor technology product development and manufacturing.OptoElectronix estimates that the solid-state lighting (SSL) light engine market, which includes the LEDs, thermal network, power driver circuitry, and optics -- all incorporated into one module -- will be approximately $5.516 billion in 2012.

 The application circuit with BCR 450 has low component count and is free of inductors, capacitors and free-wheeling diode resulting in a very small PCB space requirement. This includes the elimination of electrolytic capacitors which limit the lifetime of switch-mode driver solutions. Infineon also implemented an effective thermal shut down feature and over-voltage as well as over-current protection into the device.

Additionally, the BCR 450 with its output current precision varying only +/-10 percent over the entire operating temperature range strongly supports the homogenous light output requirement for LED lighting fixtures.The world’s largest semiconductor maker has undergone a worst profit drop in seven years in the global recession. Chang said that the company could start out first purchasing a small company, and use that as a nucleus for growth. The company is considering buying companies in solar and LED sections. Chang didn’t identify any acquisition targets or specify investment amounts.
