Using a new LED outdoor luminaire from YAHAM

Chairman B.C. Fan of Neo-Neon, which is reportedly the world`s No.1 manufacturer of decorative lights, touted that the mainland`s LED lighting market would show explosive growth as soon as the standards are introduced. Fan was born in Taiwan but has headquartered his company in Guangdong. The company is operating 21 sales outlets across the mainland. Cities account for over 70% of global energy consumption and increasing urbanization will add to that burden: by 2050 more than 75% of the world’s population is expected to be living in cities and towns. Up to 50% of municipal electricity usage is attributed to lighting, and yet three-quarters of all installed public lighting today in cities relies on aging, inefficient lighting technology.

YAHAM is to highlight the ready availability of energy-efficient alternatives by performing a concept demonstration of an innovative solar-powered LED lighting solution outside the YAHAM Lighting – location of the main COP15 conference sessions.Using a new LED outdoor luminaire from YAHAM, the installation is built around the innovative solar-powered TouchĂ© lamp pole designed by leading Danish architect Bjarne Schläger and supplied by Alfred Preiss. The pole is made from recyclable materials and incorporates highly energy-efficient silica-based solar cells integrated into the upright of the pole. Each pole is completely self-sufficient, effectively delivering 100% CO2 reduction in usage. Combined with the Philips luminaire, the complete solution is capable of making energy savings of up to 67% compared with conventional lamps used in urban environments.

Despite Nichia planned to enter into LED markets in China

This emerging potential for green LED applications follows on the heels of an announcement of applications for blue LEDs on April 25, 2012. NGK is now poised to apply its technology to the inverters used in hybrid and electric vehicles, power amplifiers for base stations of wireless communication, and other power devices. To this end, NGK will take steps to further reduce defect density for its GaN wafers, and to produce larger wafers that are greater than 6 inches in diameter. Despite Nichia planned to enter into LED markets in China and enlarge its market share there, it has been foiled by simmering anti-Japan sentiment in China due mainly to the Diaoyutai island issue, so is considering to cooperate with Taiwanese enterprises for further development. And two Taiwanese companies, including Hon Hai Group and Epistar, will be part of the joint venture. According to senior Nichia executives and based on positive outlook towards widespread use of LED lighting, the firm focused on the amp...
